Death toll from US' 'mother of all bombs' rises to 94

The U.S. dropped the "mother of all bombs" on ISIS's headquarters in Afghanistan after repeated efforts to expel the militants failed.

An Afghan official says the number of militants killed in an attack by the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the USA military has risen to 94.

U.S Forces on Thursday night dropped a Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) bomb on Achin district in Nangarhar.

The dead included several leaders of the Islamic State affiliate, which is loosely connected to the main militant organization based in Iraq and Syria, Afghan officials said.

"This is not the war on terror, but the inhuman and most brutal misuse of our country as testing ground for new and risky weapons", he said on social media network Twitter.

- Hamid Karzai (@KarzaiH) April 13, 20172/3 weapons.

A current Afghan official also denounced the bombing.

"This bomb wasn't only a violation of our sovereignty and a disrespect to our soil and environment, but will have bad effects for years", he said.

"If big bombs were the solution, we would be the most secure place on earth today".

"The enemy had created bunkers, tunnels and extensive mine fields, and this weapon was used to reduce those obstacles so that we could continue our offensive in Nangarhar", General John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said on Friday.President Ashraf Ghani threw his support behind the bombardment, saying it was "designed to support the efforts of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and United States forces conducting clearance operations in the region".

Shinwari insisted there were "no military and civilian casualties at all".

The bombing came only a week after the United States carried out a missile strike on the Shayrat Airfield near Homs, Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town in Idlib province, the blame for which Washington pinned on the Assad government.

The ultra-heavy explosive is equal to 11 tonnes of TNT with a blast radius of 1.6km.

The bomb smashed ISIS hideouts in a tunnel-and-cave complex that had been mined against conventional ground attacks, engulfing the remote area in a huge mushroom cloud and towering flames.

Achin district's governor told AFP that the explosion was "the biggest I have ever seen". A statement released Friday through ISIS' media wing, Amaq News Agency, said none of the terror group's fighters were killed or injured.

The Taliban, meanwhile, condemned the bombing.

"Using this massive bomb can not be justified and will leave a material and psychological impact on our people", the Taliban, who compete with Islamic State in Afghanistan, said in a statement.

"It was the right time to use it tactically against the right target on the battlefield". "We are still conducting our assessment", it said.

The GBU-43 had never been used in combat since its first test in 2003.

"The number of Daesh fighters killed in the US bomb in Achin district jumped to 94, including four commanders", Nangarhar provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogiani told CNN.

Cancian, an adviser at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies think-tank, said regular bombs were not able to destroy a tunnel and cave complex.

"We were all scared, and my children and my wife were crying".

Estimates of ISIL's strength in Afghanistan vary. U.S. and Afghan forces had been unable to advance because ISIS - which has expanded into Afghanistan in recent years - had mined the area with explosives.
