Apple gets green light to test self-driving cars

She added that Apple's entry into the self-driving wars will push the industry to "provide a product that's not only safer, but more secure at a potentially even faster timeline than we're already experiencing". The permit from the CA DMV confirms that it will soon test its autonomous technology on public roads.

The iPhone maker has disclosed little about its ambitions when it comes to self-driving vehicles, with chief Tim Cook hinting at plans but the company declining to comment for news reports on long-idling rumours.

It could or could not happen, but one thing is for sure that certainly brings such an idea closer to reality - Apple has managed to pick up a California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) permit which allows Cupertino to test out its self-driving auto on public roads, if it has such a thing in the pipeline that is.

But wait. Didn't Apple scrap its Project Titan (the one it never acknowledged until it said it was not going to make any self-driving cars) and start focusing only on the software part of autonomous driving technology? Cybart suspects that Apple wants to ideal the software, then move to the task of building the vehicle that surrounds it. In addition to the permit, the state of California also requires companies to file public reports about their self-driving tests, including crash reports and how many times the human driver has had to take over. The company is only testing components of a self-driving auto.

Stockholm attack suspect sympathetic to Islamic State, police say
A second person was also arrested, "suspected of terror crimes through murder", according to Sweden's prosecutor's office . But police said they were more convinced than ever that the Uzbek man was the driver of the commandeered truck.

Apple issued the letter because it is "investing heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems", an Apple spokesman said in an email to AFP at the time. He requested the regulators that established players and new entrants be treated equally.

Apple does not test a full self-driving auto.

The original vision of building a whole "Apple Car" may have been diluted by the realities of actually engineering the hardware, which arguably falls well outside Apple's design expertise in consumer technology. Bloomberg reported that the hiring of Mr. Dodge was part of its strategic changes within its Project Titan team to focus on a self-driving platform instead of developing a full-blown autonomous vehicle. However, after the departure of key employees working on the project, Apple appointed Bob Mansfield as the new project chief a year ago.
