Trudeau leads Battle of Vimy 100-year commemoration in France

War Museum Vimy Beyond the Battle exhibition

The battle of Vimy Ridge began at dawn on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917, when all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked Vimy.

The area around the memorial was also lined with empty black combat boots, representing those who died.

Roughly 3,600 Canadian troops lost their lives and thousands of other soldiers were injured while under British command during the three days of fighting, resulting in the appearance of Trudeau as a mark of respect for the Canadian soldiers. "It was the beginning of our Canadian identity, the shaping of who we are", said Janusz.

Two Canadian Mounted Police sit on their horses prior to a sunset ceremony and mounting of the vigil at the WWI Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Givenchy-en-Gohelle, France on Saturday, April 8, 2017. I can say without hesitation that Manitobans have never forgotten, and we will never forget, the sacrifice made by our courageous men and women in uniform.

The Defence Secretary said: 'Today, 100 years ago, British, Canadian and Australian troops served together with enormous courage and sacrifice, with thousands losing their lives in the Battle of Arras and the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

"The importance given to the Battle of Vimy is a post-war mythological construction", he said, an "invention" dating back only to 1967, the year of Canada's centennial and the battle's 50 anniversary.

The site became a piece of Canadian territory on French soil in 1922 and is featured on the $20 bill.

"Despite all of these efforts, the outcome was uncertain, the cost of victory very high".

Trudeau, Hollande and Prince Charles will each give speeches and lay wreaths during the ceremony. "Many Canadians paid a awful price for this historic victory at Vimy, and I am humbled and honoured to be part of a company that has contributed so much to protecting the people and values we all hold so dear".

More than 200 people attended the B.C. Dragoons' tribute to the Battle of Vimy Ridge at the Vernon cenotaph. This was, and remains, the single bloodiest day in Canadian military history.

"Yet Canadians displayed a strength of character and commitment to one another that is still evident today. This was Canada at its best".

Hollande, Trudeau and British princes Charles, William and Harry were to take part in a ceremony later on Sunday expected to draw some 25,000 people. The variety of commemorative activities were created to bring Canadians, especially youth, together, to honour Canada's victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge and contribution to the First World War.

During a ceremony in the city centre earlier in the day, Arras Mayor Frederic Leturque thanked Australia, Britain, New Zealand and South Africa for having fought during that larger battle.
