Stockholm Terrorist Was Ordered To Be Deported Shortly Before Attack

The four victims killed in Friday's truck attack on shoppers in the Swedish capital included a British man, a Belgian woman and two Swedes, authorities in those countries said.

Swedish prosecutor Hans Ihrman said a person has been formally identified as a suspect "of terrorist offences by murder" after a hijacked truck was driven into a crowd of pedestrians and crashed into a department store on Friday.

Police have interviewed more than 500 people over the incident, Sweden's TT news agency has reported.

According to The New York Times, the head of the Swedish Security Service spoke at a news conference earlier Saturday, and while he did not identify the suspect by name he confirmed that the man was born in Uzbekistan, and admitted that their intelligence investigation past year did not turn up anything substantial.

"Nothing indicates that we have the wrong person, on the contrary, suspicions have strengthened as the investigation has progressed", Dan Eliasson, head of Sweden's national police, told a news conference on Saturday.

According to the Washington Post, Friday's attack marks the "first major apparent terrorist strike in Stockholm". They said the suspect had been on their radar before but not recently, and did not explain why authorities apparently had not considered him a serious threat.

After Princess Victoria came a stream of public officials, including for the second time, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven who then walked the five blocks to parliament.

The lion-shaped boulders on Drottninggatan are meant as roadblocks and have been put up in several European capitals after a truck attack previous year killed 12 people at a Christmas market in Berlin. "That is what we're going to build on", she said, praising a city "characterised by openness and tolerance".

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Furthermore, the police commander told AftonBladet that the attacker was interested and sympathetic to ISIS, as shown by his online posts. Stockholm county spokesman Patrik Soderberg said four of the 10 were considered "seriously" injured and the remaining six, including the child, were slightly hurt.

Sweden's vice-prime minister, Isabella Lovin, and Education Minister Gustav Fridolin laid red and yellow roses Saturday morning, close to the site of the attack. Raids were made by police at a number of properties over the weekend.
