Palestinians ask Red Cross to intervene in hunger strike

President Donald Trump talks about the Veterans Choice Program Extension and Improvement Act before signing it Wednesday

The failure to achieve any sort of unity between the Fatah faction which governs the West Bank and the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip have prevented new elections resulting in Hamas disavowing Abbas as an illegitimate president.

Two years later he was convicted on five counts of murder. The human rights focused NGO Amnesty International recently issued a report on this matter.

"Their continuous suffering and premeditated medical negligence pushed the sick prisoners to join the hunger strike", the lawyer said, stressing that "hunger strike cause much deterioration to the already deteriorate health conditions of the patient prisoners". The biggest solidarity demonstration was held in Ramallah, where some 2,000 people took to the street.

"Sinn Féin Republican Youth sends solidarity to all Palestinian political prisoners including those now on Hunger Strike". The campaign highlights the PA's complicity in Israel's occupation, including the imprisonment and torture of Palestinian dissidents like al-Araj, and has rejuvenated many young Palestinians into organizing protests, public talks, and social media messages to inform fellow Palestinians of the connected nature of their oppression.

Dr. Ghassan Khatib, a former senior member in the Palestinian government, told VICE News that Fatah's senior leadership not only supports the hunger strike but also is coordinating with Barghouti and the prisoners.

It was dismaying to read an op-ed article by Marwan Barghouti in The New York Times this past Sunday. Barghouti's document explains his reasons behind the protest.

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely describes Barghouti, in an email sent to the worldwide media, as "a convicted murderer and a terrorist", adding: "When a major newspaper with a reputation for responsible journalism becomes a platform for murderers, it provides legitimacy for terrorism". We wish the terrorists success in the strike.

Rather than negotiating Palestinian prisoners partaking in the strikes, prison management banned family visitation as well as did not allow for the detainees to meet with their legal representatives. They are convicted terrorists and murderers. "They were brought to justice and are treated properly under global law".

Prison officials have started "disciplinary measures towards the striking prisoners and transferring them into separate cell blocks", the spokesman said.

Contacted by AFP, Israel's prison service declined to comment on the number.

Some 1,500 Palestinian prisoners have joined the hunger strike that began Monday, according to Issa Qaraqe, head of detainees' affairs for the Palestinian Authority. In its tagline at the bottom of his article, the Times said only this: "Marwan Barghouti is a Palestinian leader and parliamentarian".

The inmates' unity is most likely due to the high consideration Barghouti enjoys among the Palestinian population. Polls suggest that the 58-year-old Barghouti is the most popular choice among Palestinians to succeed the 82-year-old Abbas. Speaking exclusively to VICE News, Barghouti's son Qassam was emphatic that his father is leading the strike in order to help his fellow prisoners. If they want to preserve what little credibility they have left outside of the leftist elite on the Israeli/Palestinian issue, the Times needs to not only be completely upfront about the carnage that Barghouti and his fellow travelers have left in their wake; but also admit that they have a clear slant on the dispute.
