Emma Watson and James McAvoy up for MTV Movie & TV Awards

Emma Watson delivered a powerful speech on gender while accepting the first award of the evening at the 2017 MTV Awards on Sunday, May 7.

Emma won for her work in Beauty and the Beast and she noted that fans probably gave her the award "because of who Belle is and what she represents". It's the first acting award in history that doesn't separate nominees based on their sex, and that says something about how we perceive the human experience.

Before the show, Dillon addressed the honor of presenting the genderless award.

"She tried on this suit and there was a piece of me that was like 'I don't know, ' but then she started to pose in it and we just fell in love with it".

Nominated for best actor in a show were Donald Glover of "Atlanta", Emilia Clarke for "Game of Thrones", Gina Rodriguez of "Jane the Virgin", Jeffrey Dean Morgan for "The Walking Dead", Mandy Moore of "This Is Us" and Millie Bobby Brown for "Stranger Things". This is very meaningful for me, both to be receiving the award, and to be receiving it from you, Asia: Thank you for educating me in such an inclusive, patient, and loving way.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards will be available to cable TV subscribers on the MTV family of channels as well as BET, Comedy Central, Spike and TV Land.

He said: "I think it's incredible". After her first-ever iHeartRadio Awards performance in March, she headed down to Coachella to perform the future bass track "Chasing Colors" with collaborators Marshmello and Ookay.

"I think it's about time we should say who is the best storyteller rather than who is the best man or who is the best woman".

Watson is also up against Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy for best big-screen actor at the inaugural awards.

The move away from gendered categories brings it in line with the Grammy Awards, which scrapped male and female prizes in 2011.

She said: "Tonight I want to thank MTV and Mum".
