Baton Rouge Police Officers Won't Face Charges In Killing Of Alton Sterling

Veda Washington-Abusaleh an aunt of Alton Sterling attends a vigil Tuesday night for the man who was shot by police in Baton Rouge La. last July

A person familiar with the decision disclosed it to the AP on Tuesday.

Videos of the incident did not conclusively show Sterling's hand when the first shot was sacked, making it impossible to prove the officers' account was untrue, the department said. Louisiana doesn't have to launch an investigation into the Sterling shooting, but the attorney general indicated in a written statement that he thinks it should.

Raheejah Flowers, 16, fought back tears as she told the crowd that "this is not the end".

Broome said she realized that many members of the community were hoping and praying that for DOJ to come to a different conclusion. But if we look to recent developments in police shooting cases, for too long, families of victims of police brutality have waited months - and even years - for answers. Sterling's death sparked protests against police brutality around the country after a video showed the 37-year-old father being shot multiple times by the white police officers. The city was still reeling from the shootings when August floodwaters damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes in the area.

After Sterling took his hands off the hood of the vehicle, the struggle began and the officers and suspect went to the ground. He called cellphone video of the incident "disturbing, to say the least".

"Open up your heart, your eyes, and give us the justice that we deserve", said Quinyetta McMillon, the mother of Sterling's oldest son.

"The Governor's Office has not been notified of a timeline or decision regarding the Alton Sterling investigation".

"Salamoni put that gun to his head and said, 'I'm going to kill you, ' " she told reporters Wednesday. "To date, this matter has not been investigated or reviewed for possible violations of the Louisiana Criminal Code", Landry said shortly after federal officials announced they wouldn't be bringing charges.

In confirming no charges would be brought against the police, the department said Mr Sterling was armed and refused to follow commands.

Landry said his investigation "could take a considerable amount of time". However, Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat who oversees the state police, said the investigation is in Landry's hands.

Lee Wesley urged Broome to demand the release of body camera video from the officers that is expected to show what happened outside the Triple S Food Mart in the early morning hours of July 5 past year.

Once there were three shots fired, Amundson said Sterling began to sit up and roll to his left with his back to the officers, when three more shots were fired.

"Although the videos do not show Sterling's right hand at the time those shots were fired, they show that Sterling's right hand was not under Officer Salamoni's control". The officers pinned Sterling to the ground, but in a video of the incident one officer can be heard yelling "he's got a gun!"

"It's not right. Lord have Mercy", Alton Sterling's aunt, Sandra Sterling, told CNN.

"I am appalled that this news, whether true or false, has been disseminated without a formal decision being relayed to the Sterling family first". "We need closure. We need conviction".

Justin Bamberg, an attorney for some of Sterling's relatives, has said the family wanted an indictment.

The shooting came the day before a police officer in Minnesota shot school cafeteria manager Philando Castile during a traffic stop that was broadcast on Facebook, and in the same week that a black man upset by police and out to kill white people gunned down five officers in Dallas.

Amundson said that the investigators are not from Baton Rouge and had no stakes in the case, saying that, "being reckless" was not the basis under the law for a civil rights prosecution.

Sterling's family held a separate news conference to call on Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry to pursue state criminal charges.
