Local letter carriers recognized for efforts to Stamp Out Hunger in 2016

39;Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive Pick Up on Saturday

"Letter carriers walk through the community every day, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many - hunger", which is the reason for this food drive, stated a letter from the post office. In the days leading up to the food drive, letter carriers were expected to deliver special bags to be used to bag donations. Letter carriers will pick up the items then donate them to local food pantries, Castillo said.

The drive was started in 1991 by the National Association of Letter Carriers with a pilot drive held in 10 cities.

Food collected by the letter carriers will be donated to the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges (IFPO).

Trump Allows Russian Media To White House, Keeps US Press Out

Since its inception 25 ago, Stamp Out Hunger has collected approximately 1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in America. It could have to do with giving fatigue from all the other, smaller food drives that happen throughout the year, or declining news readership or changes in philanthropic habits. Local letters will ensure that the food is picked up and delivered to Island Harvest Food Bank. And, with most school meal programs suspended during summer months, millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition. Food items that are needed the most include peanut butter, cereal, rice, beans, chili, canned stews, canned soups, full meals, and pop-top food items. Donations should be left in a sturdy bag. "We are hoping to beat it this year", she said.

Stamp Out Hunger has collected 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of food for the Salvation Army of Virginia in past years. "We're able to be in contact with many more individuals through our rural carriers, which gives us an opportunity to reach out to everyone as far as picking up items for the food bank". He added that some bags were sent to the Ellerbe post office.
