Democratic Republic of the Congo hit by Ebola outbreak

The outbreak reportedly started around April 22 in the Bas-Uele province, about 1,300 km (800 miles) northeast of the capital city of Kinshasa. To date there have been nine suspected cases.

Health minister Oly Illunga has urged the population not to panic.

Although the DRC health district is in a remote area, such fast action is necessary for contact tracing, an essential action to contain the outbreak, Allarangar said. Since then, there have been at least nine outbreaks in the country.

But some questions about the vaccine still remain.

One medical humanitarian organization, Alima, which works in Africa, said it is sending additional doctors, nurses, logisticians, epidemiologists and water, sanitation and hygiene experts to the region. The last was in 2014, when - at the same time - parts of West Africa were fighting a separate outbreak, the worst in history.

While Ebola outbreaks are always risky, there is some reassuring news here. And the new Canadian vaccine has provided an effective weapon for the Congolese authorities that didn't exist before.

October 2015: Ms Cafferkey is again admitted to hospital and at one point becomes critical after suffering meningitis caused by Ebola lying hidden in her spinal cord.

"As this is the eighth epidemic [of Ebola] that we are facing as a nation, we should not be rattled", Kalenga said. That outbreak was not connected to the massive epidemic in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone that left thousands dead.

The vaccine was developed at Canada's National MIcrobiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.

The virus is fatal in up to 90% of cases, and the World Health Organization recently developed an experimental vaccine for use in emergencies. But 23 cases occurred among those in a control group whose vaccination had been delayed.

"We were able to estimate the efficacy of the vaccine as being 100 percent in a trial", Ira Longini, a biostatistician at the University of Florida, told NPR's Michaeleen Doucleff last December. Namely: How long does the vaccine last?
