Queen Elizabeth's Husband Prince Philip Announces Retirement From Public Engagements

Prince Philip is patron of 780 organisations and although he will remain committed to them all, the royals say he will no longer "play an active role by attending engagements".

Prince Philip, the 95-year-old cricket-loving husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, will step down from carrying out royal engagements from September, the Buckingham Palace announced today.

The decision was taken with the full support of the monarch, the palace said in a statement.

The longest-serving consort to a monarch in British history, Prince Philip, who turns 96 next month, will continue to attend previously agreed events until August, but won't be accepting new invitations, the palace said in a statement.

He said the Duke may choose to limit his participation at the events he does attend.

Jeremy Corbyn, Labour leader, commented on Philip's decision "We thank Prince Philip for his service to the country and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement".

"You're about to see the world's most experienced plaque-unveiler", he quipped just before pulling the cord to part a small curtain.

This morning it was finally confirmed after speculations what the "emergency" meeting called at Buckingham Palace was about that The Duke of Edinburgh is stepping down from public duties this autumn. He has been by the queen's side during her 65-year reign, and they will celebrate 70 years of marriage in November.

Prince Philip spent 110 days past year making official engagements, the BBC reported, makng him the fifth busiest member of the royal family.

Attention has been increasingly focused on her son Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and on her grandson Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

A palace worker who answered the phone in what would have been the early hours in London told Stuff: "I haven't been told anything, so as far as I'm aware the Queen and the Duke are very much alive".

French media also mistakenly published stories wrongly suggesting the Duke of Edinburgh had died. Past year he attended 219 royal engagements.

Since they Wednesday in 1947, the Prince has made more than 22,000 solo appearances, not to mention thousands more standing beside his wife.
