Hull relegated, Crystal Palace secures Premier League status

Breaking: Crystal Palace relegate Hull City

After just one season in the top flight they return to the second tier and join Sunderland and Middlesbrough on the way down.

Coming in the closing weeks of this year's Premier League campaign, the match will be a relegation showdown between the two teams; with Hull needing a win in order to get out of 18th place and Crystal Palace, now 16th, only needing one point to guarantee a secure spot for next season.

"Today is a bad day because our fans didn't deserve this".

From that point on Hull had the air of a defeated team.

Belief has been the buzz word at Hull's training ground in Cottingham following last week's home defeat to Sunderland, a huge setback which plunged them back into the relegation zone with two games to go. The potential absences for this contest are not going to help their cause, but Palace needs to win at all costs if they don't want to complicate their situation even further.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at five things we learned in the Premier League this weekend.

Such a comprehensive defeat was in-keeping with the club's awful away form this season, winning just one game on the road as they slipped further and further into the mire after a positive start to the campaign under Mike Phelan.

The victory for Palace, who only needed a draw to preserve their Premier League status, means Sam Allardyce maintains his remarkable record of never having been relegated from the top-flight. Silva arrived in January and, while securing some eye-catching home results, the Portuguese has gleaned only two points from nine away fixtures. Despite Hull's relegation, few reputations have grown during the second half of this season as manager Marco Silva's. They ended up 2-0 down in a very short period of time, but the experience of the players shone through in the end. "It's been tough for them at times, but they've stuck with us all the way and I'm delighted for them more than anyone".

"I believe we can win the next game".

Crystal Palace: Hennessey 6, Ward 7, Kelly 6, Tomkins 7, Schlupp 7, Cabaye 7, Milivojevic 7, Puncheon 7, Zaha 8, Benteke 7, Townsend 7.

"Now, of course they're in a better position than us, but they need to do something to (make themselves) safe".

Just 21% of Christian Benteke's Premier League goals this season have come at Selhurst Park (3/14), the lowest percentage of home goals in the division (min. 10 goals).

Only Andy Johnson (21 in 2004/05) has ever scored more goals for Palace in a single PL season than Christian Benteke this term (15).
