Whirring, Purring Fidget Spinners Provide Entertainment, Not ADHD Help

St George's Primary School in Minster, Sheppey, is among several in Kent to ban fidget spinners.

Fidget spinner toys have recently become one of the most popular accessories to own.

Fidget spinners are now all the rage amongst Scottish children, and are flying off the shelves of local toy shops. Take one prong, give it a spin and watch as the triangle shape becomes a blur, sort of like a ceiling fan.

Many children with autism also have elevated symptoms of ADHD, so it stands to reason that fidgeting could aid them too-in theory, anyway.

Although popular with kids, schools across Britain and the U.S. are banning the devices because of the distraction and noise they cause in lessons. Now, in states from Kentucky to NY to California have banned the toy from classrooms.

"You kind of get attracted to it because they are trying to do tricks with them and everyone else is looking at it". While her test results were interesting, she can't endorse fidget toys yet.

"It seemed like one day there was a few, and the next day there was a few, and the next day everyone had them. It just adds to the chaos".

According to fidget spinner database SpinnerList, 32% of the top 200 American high schools - the 100 largest private and 100 largest public schools, according to Department of Education data - have banned spinners from the premises, or plan to ban the toy by the end of the week.

A three-pronged gadget is the latest fad spinning out of control with kids.

The fidget spinner is set off more than just a tidal wave of increased revenue.

Julie Schweitzer, a clinical psychologist at the MIND Institute at the University of California at Davis, has been studying ADHD for 25 years.

Kollins says that there's been no research shown that proves fidget spinners are effective at addressing those issues. But, says Anderson, "the distinction between those interventions and [fidget spinners] is that those interventions allow the child to move, but this particular intervention isn't necessarily letting the child get their wiggles out, but rather play with a toy". Some manufactures claim they can benefit children with disorders like ADHD, but some teachers want them out of the classroom. She states she does not know whether her patent, which expired in 2005, is actually the same as the fidget spinner, but is using her newfound public image to help launch an app. Many people have become enamored with the toy including office workers, people suffering from anxiety or stress and they have also become popular with children.
