Callista Gingrich likely to be named ambassador to Vatican

Callista Gingrich to be ambassador to Vatican

Less than two weeks before a potentially tense and diplomatically delicate meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, President Donald Trump has apparently settled on nominating Callista Gingrich, the wife of Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, as the US ambassador to the Holy See, according to two people close to the president.

Newt Gingrich did not confirm nor deny the report to The New York Times on Sunday, but said he and his wife had to "be very cautious" until an announcement was made. She is also a member of the choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington. The two have been fascinated by the papacy, producing a documentary about Pope John Paul II in 2010. She has no experience at all in diplomacy, like virtually everyone else Trump has nominated for such positions.

Schlageter said Callista Gingrich's time producing the documentary about Pope John Paul helped her create professional relationships and friendships in the USA and Rome that will serve her well should she be confirmed to the post. After his 1999 divorce, the two married the following year and he became a Catholic in 2009, saying Callista, a lifelong Catholic, was instrumental in making that choice.

President Barack Obama's first Ambassador to the Holy See, Miguel H. Díaz, was a professor of theology and the first Hispanic U.S. Vatican Ambassador.

According to CNN, the administration has decided on Gingrich - a devout Catholic - for the position, which could also see her husband - a frequent Fox News guest - moving to Italy with her. He held the post from October 2013 until mid-January.
