Delta wants you to scan your face at the Minneapolis airport

Delta is testing a face-scanning kiosk for baggage check. The machine allows passengers to bypass check-in agents. It uses facial recognition technology to match your identity to your passport

It uses facial recognition technology to match your identity to your passport photo.

The carrier announced Monday that it'll be the first in the USA to test facial recognition technology as a means of verifying customers' identities.

The Atlanta-based carrier is spending $600,000 to test a new self-service bag drop system at MSP this summer.

Passengers without passports can still check their own bags, but they need a Delta agent to confirm their identities.

People mill around while passengers await updates from Delta airline employees at Pearson International airport, in Toronto, Canada on August 8, 2016.

Facial recognition is becoming a greater part of everyday life, with biometric security programs from companies like Android and Windows that allow the use of a user's face to unlock their device.

Facial recognition premiered at Dulles Airport security in March 2015. Face-reading check-in kiosks will be appearing at Ottawa International Airport this spring, and British Airways is rolling out a similar system at London's Heathrow Airport, comparing faces captured at security screenings with a separate capture at the boarding gate. "We see a future where Delta agents will be freed up to seek out travelers and deliver more proactive and thoughtful customer service".

"We expect this investment and new process to save customers time", said Gareth Joyce, Delta's Senior Vice President, Airport Customer Service and Cargo.

Delta says the scanned images will not be stored and the system complies with privacy laws. One kiosk will have facial recognition technology so passengers can finish checking in right then and there, while the rest will still require check-in with a human.

Delta said it would be gathering customer feedback during the tests.
