Hackers demand ransom over 'stolen Disney movie'

During a town hall meeting in NY on Monday, Disney CEO Bob Iger informed a group of ABC employees that hackers have stolen one of the company's movies. Movie website Deadline identified Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which opens on May 26 in the U.S., as the target, while some speculated on Twitter that Pixar's Cars 3 might have been hit. While governments of various countries of the world deal with the problem, Disney has landed in deep trouble with online hackers.

Disney bosses have reportedly called in the FBI to investigate a major cyber hack.

At a company town hall on Monday, Iger didn't mention the movie's title but told staff hackers are asking for a large bitcoin payment to keep the film under wraps.

It is due to be released in cinemas in the U.S. on 26 May.

Disney may be dealing with pirates - and not the Johnny Depp variety. Well, all we can do is just wait and see if Dead Men Tell No Tales will open in theatres or on the internet. Remember back in the day when movies would leak online and they would go to a pirate bay? Other Pirates favourites set to return include Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Swann and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa.

Netflix also refused to pay an undisclosed ransom amount to hackers, who subsequently released 10 of 13 episodes of the forthcoming season online - weeks ahead of the show's planned June 9 launch.

He also said Disney is refusing to pay and that the studio is working with federal investigators.

"A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved".
