With Merkel and PM, France's New President Wastes No Time

Merkel arrives in Berlin ahead of her meeting with Macron

His appointment would be seen as an effort by the centrist Mr Macron to build a majority in parliament by drawing in politicians from the right.

Philippe, from the mainstream right, and his Socialist predecessor, Bernard Cazeneuve, had only kind words for each other at their handover Monday of the prime minister's office.

Former French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, who also attended the Beijing summit, confirmed Mr Putin's claims via Twitter.

Immediately after the handover, Emmanuel Macron announced the name of his prime minister: Edouard Philippe.

Philippe Etienne, the ambassador of France to Bucharest between 2002 and 2005, has been appointed a diplomatic adviser to French president Emmanuel Macron, Rfi.ro reports.

Picking him would send a clear signal that Macron hopes to attract other young modernisers from the Republicans to his new centrist party, Republic on the Move (REM), which will contest parliamentary elections in June.

Macron, who was inaugurated on Sunday, will ram home the message that the European Union is resilient despite Britain's vote to leave and a spate of financial and migration crises that have boosted the far-right across the bloc.

Later this month Macron will hold talks with Donald Trump, when the United States president - believed to have preferred Le Pen over Macron - visits Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. After several years in the private sector, Edouard Philippe is close to Alain Juppé, where he becomes the director of cabinet (under Sarkozy in 2007) and then his spokesman during the primaries of the center and the right.

Alexis Kohler, Mr Macron's new general secretary at the presidential Elysee Palace, made the announcement on Monday.

The former has scored goals and tormented West Ham in the past and it's an experience Liverpool should look to pounce upon. Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool): Two goals and an assist crowned one of his best performances since his return from injury.

The mayor of Le Havre since 2010, Mr Philippe previously worked as a director of public affairs for French nuclear group Areva from 2007-2010 and as a lawyer from 2004-2007 with New York City-based worldwide law firm Debevoise and Plimpton LLP.

He is now mayor of Le Havre, a port in Normandy in the north of France.

Baroin reacted sharply to a suggestion that Macron, a 39-year-old ex-banker who served briefly as economy minister in a Socialist government, was reshaping politics.

Mr Macron said he would go to Lausanne, Switzerland, for a key IOC meeting in July and he may go to Lima, Peru, in September, where the committee makes its final decision.

Philippe, a 46-year-old MP and mayor of the northern port of Le Havre, comes from the moderate wing of the rightwing Republicans party and is seen as a pragmatist.

He also speaks fluent German - a strategic move from Macron, who will need the support of Angela Merkel and Germany if he is to succeed in his ambitious reforms of the European Union.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she has no intention of telling France what to do as new President Emmanuel Macron tries to revive his country's economy.

Merkel welcomed Macron's victory over Le Pen, saying he carried "the hopes of millions of French people and also many in Germany and across Europe".
