Boris Johnson causes fury in Sikh temple with unfortunate alcohol remarks

U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson | Pool

Boris Johnson was attacked by angry Sikh residents during a visit to a temple in Bristol, after telling them he would make it easier to trade alcohol between the United Kingdom and India.

A source said that he pointed out in India billions of whisky is consumed each year but there is a 120 per cent duty on imports of scotch whisky.

Sixty-two-year-old grandmother told Johnson: "I wouldn't be wanting to put somebody in power who wants to put more alcohol in India which is causing lots of problems at the moment".

But one worshipper, speaking during a subsequent question and answer session with Johnson, said she would be against increasing whisky exports to India because "it's against our religion".

Speaking after the incident on Wednesday evening, the grandmother said: "How can Boris Johnson help the Sikhs?"

"I'm sorry if am shouting but it's something that is very important to me". I'm a practicing Sikh. "But imagine what we could do if there was a free trade deal with India", he said, according to a video published online by the Bristol Post newspaper.

The Foreign Secretary used alcohol as an example of the benefits of a trade deal between the United Kingdom and India during a Conservative Party visit.

His words provoked an angry response from some members of the crowd, with one women, named as Balbir Kaur, particularly vocal in her criticism.

"I do think it is relevant to our considerations that whisky is a huge business in this country and a free trade deal with India would be of great value". On imports of Scotch whisky.

As such, alcoholism is beginning to be seen as a negative vice amongst Sikhs more and more, as recognition of the damages of alcoholism continue to rise.

The personal story the spokesperson talked about was in reference to Kaur telling Johnson about how she had relatives who suffered from alcoholism.

Mr Johnson was at the Nirman Sewak Jatha temple in St George, Bristol, to show his support for the party's Bristol East parliamentary candidate Theo Clarke.

Sikh Federation (UK) General Secretary Bhai Narinderjit Singh also criticized the former London mayor's comments, while challenging the Brexiteer to introduce an independent public inquiry into the Sikh Genocide of 1984 - a topic that is featured in Labour's election manifesto.

"It is a requirement that Sikhs should not consume any intoxicants", he said. Lib Dem shadow foreign secretary Tom Brake said: "This crass misjudgement has shown Boris Johnson is incapable of representing his own party at home, let alone representing Britain overseas".

"You are talking hundreds of millions of pounds of new exports and more exports is great for a fantastic export city like Bristol", said Johnson, who was wearing a saffron turban. "There was no gaffe. The temple regulars loved him being there".
