Solange Pens Honest And Inspiring Letter To Teenage Self For Teen Vogue

Saint Heron Instagra

Solange Knowles is an artistic force to be reckoned with - just look to her latest album, A Seat at the Table, for proof.

Elsewhere in the letter, Solange reflected on what shecalls the toughest year of her life - which included the death of her childhood friend Marsai Song and the birth of her now 12-year-old son Daniel Julez.

Solange adds that she occasionally still finds herself the subject of name calling as an adult, but has learned to turn them "into a symbol of beauty".

"...when you go out into the world feeling confident in who you are and what you reflect, young folks will call you names and grown folks will call you names It's ok. one day you will name yourself, and that name will belong to you.it will not be the ones they ordained: 'crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo'. No one you love will criticise you or blame you; in fact, they will lift you up". It won't make you less strong or less powerful. Soon enough you will learn how to love and how to exist with love in ways that you never knew. "They break down all of the archetypes and stereotypes that you see of black women on TV and in magazines, so you don't trust those anymore", she wrote.

To close the essay, Solange is real about life's ups and down, saying "there will be pain, there will be doubt", but also doesn't hold back when being honest about the beauty of coming into your own. "And you will feel good about who she is and who she is still becoming". Clearly, the singer wanted to help young people with the letter, but you can tell she found writing it cathartic.

In a recent essay for Teen Vogue, Solange blesses us with some insight on how she developed into the regal being she is today.
