Lawmakers demand swift action for Turkish Embassy violence

Turkey regards the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is deemed a terrorist organization by the United States, Turkey and the European Union.

Erdogan, speaking to a group of business leaders in Istanbul, said he told the United States that Turkey would "exercise its rights under the rules of engagement", without consulting anyone, if it faced a threat.

"The Turkish government owes an apology; perhaps they forgot we have unalienable rights in this country", Cardin tweeted.

The decision is meant to accelerate the operation to recapture the key Islamic State group stronghold of Raqqa. "We would just take the step".

Turkey's foreign minister also demanded that a USA envoy be removed for allegedly backing the Kurds, but the State Department said Brett McGurk has the "full support" of the Trump administration.

"This McGurk is definitely supporting the PKK and YPG".

Cavusoglu also said that Germany is free to withdraw its troops stationed at the Incirlik air base near the Turkish border with Syria if it wants to, adding that Berlin should drop its "patronizing approach" to Ankara.

The D.C. Police Department said in a statement, "We will continue to work with our partners at the Unites States State Department and the United States Secret Service to identify and hold all subject accountable for their involvement in the altercation".

Differences over Syria policy have caused friction with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Washington.

Washington and Ankara are at odds over US plans to support the YPG, a Syrian Kurdish militia battling IS militants.

Last month, Turkish warplanes bombed Kurdish fighters in Iraq's Sinjar region and YPG militia in Syria.

Witnesses told AFP that members of Erdogan's security detail pushed past Washington police outside the ambassador's residence and attacked a group of supporters of a Kurdish group.

US officials strongly criticized the Turkish government after video appeared to show its president's security forces pushing past police and violently breaking up a protest outside their diplomatic residence in Washington. Video shows people pushing past police to confront a small group of protesters across the street in Sheridan Circle.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator John McCain, one of the leading foreign policy voices in Congress, on May 18 urged the expulsion of Turkey's U.S. ambassador after violence erupted between protesters and Turkish security personnel during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's recent visit.

"This is the United States of America, this isn't Turkey, this isn't a third-world country, and this kind of thing can not go un-responded to diplomatically and maybe in other ways", McCain added.
