Secretary Kelly, don't hire Sheriff Clarke

David Clarke says he's joining Trump administration

According to the New York Times, Clarke has yet to address the responsibility he faces for the oversight on the death of Terrill Thomas, a prison inmate, with history of mental illness that died of dehydration in April of 2016 after the staff members cut off the water in his cell for a week. One of the few African-Americans to speak a year ago at the convention, Clarke called Black Lives Matter protests "anarchy". Although DHS has not confirmed the appointment, sources said the controversial sheriff will serve as the department's Assistant Secretary for Partnership and Engagement.

It's not clear if Clarke had endorsed the language, which Baldwin called "stomach-churning name-calling", or if he was even interested in running for Senate.

"In his time as Milwaukee County Sheriff, David Clarke had four inmates die under his supervision, repeatedly made inappropriate and incendiary comments, promoted violence, and used threats and intimidation against innocent citizens".

"I'm both honored and humbled to be appointed to this position", Clarke said during the interview. "He's playing the race game".

In another he's seen standing up to notoriously biased Don Lemon to the point that Lemon tells his crew to cut the feed and go to commercial.

He has been called "a wild-card", "outspoken and polarizing", and "a conservative firebrand", by the Associated Press, which also noted that Clarke has called himself "one of those bare-knuckle fighters". Since the election, he has continued defending Trump as a cable news surrogate and elsewhere. Clarke says he would be serving as a liaison to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies. He further stated that "the law of the jungle replaced the rule of law..." When Trump approached him about a Homeland Security job, Sheriff David Clarke's only question: "Does it come with a cute costume?" pic.twitter.com/QAGAmpvWOS - Mrs. Betty Bowers (@BettyBowers) May 18, 2017 The sheriff, who is a black man, has received specific criticism for his negative remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement and the black community in general. "Blue lives matter in America", he said as he opened his speech.

In an op-ed he wrote for Fox News in July 2016 entitled "It's Time to Stand Up to Black Lives Matter", Clarke wrote that "white America needs to be fearless, they need to stand up against this latest attack on the Black community by the likes of Black Lives Matter - to be unafraid to face the condemnation of the powerful but morally reprehensible liberal elites and mainstream media pushing these lies".

In 2015, he belittled the group as "Black Lies Matter", saying they "will join forces with [the Islamic State] to bring down our legal constituted republic. You heard it first here".
