Si Woo Kim wins The Players Championship

South Korea's Si Woo Kim produced a nerveless display to become the youngest ever victor of the Players Championship but will soon be set to put his burgeoning career on hold for 21 months for national service.

On a TPC Sawgrass course where anything can go wrong without notice, Kim was the only player to go bogey-free Sunday and closed with 3-under 69 for a three-shot victory in golf's biggest tournament this side of the majors.

But the real star of the weekend was TaylorMade player Kim who managed to hold his nerve among 48 of the world's top-50 golfers to finish The Players with an incredible 10-under 278.

Poulter, who tied Oosthuizen for second, trailed by two shots for nearly the entire back nine.

Kim's second PGA Tour victory earned him US$1.89 million (US$1=W1,123). Last year, McIlroy was No. 38 in the standings when he arrived at TPC Boston, and moved all the way up to No. 4 with his second career win at the Dell Technologies Championship.

Oosthuizen appeared poised to make a charge after he rolled in a 34-foot eagle putt on No. 11 to get to 8 under and within two shots of Kim. He was the only player to seriously challenge Kim until he ran out of holes, and then it was a matter of finishing second.

"I still can't believe I'm the champion, and I'm very excited that I am the youngest champion", Kim said during the post-tournament interview.

Kim's countryman, 30-year-old San Moon Bae, a three-time USA tour victor, is now completing his military service after losing a court case to defer it.

Englishman Ian Poulter (71) was the only player to put pressure on Kim over the final few holes. "From the beginning of this year, I really wished I could be top 10 so I could get the ticket to get in".

"I know he hit a couple of fantastic shots yesterday to get himself out of trouble, driver off the deck on 14 was a pretty impressive shot". He tied for 41st, the worst finish by a 54-hole leader in tournament history. Today I felt like a couple of putts slid by, but I played well under pressure, barring that terrible second shot on the last. "You up-and-down when you're in trouble, you just don't give shots away. Never once did he look flustered at all". Defending champion Jason Day made a quadruple-bogey 9 at the par-5 16th hole, hit his tee shot at No. 17 into the water, and limped home with an 80 to tie for 60th and kept up the streak of no back-to-back champions. It took him eight shots in four rounds, or the same number of shots J.B. Holmes had on Sunday when he made his quintuple bogey. He doesn't have to worry about keeping his PGA Tour card next year.
