China's Xi Jinping seeks to reboot relations with South Korea

Abe, S. Korean leader's envoy agree to resume 'shuttle diplomacy'

Ties between the two countries have soured in recent months over the deployment of the powerful Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) shield in South Korea, which Beijing sees as a threat to its own military capability.

China has urged restraint, but as a result of the latest missile test, the Chinese are considering closing the Yalu River Bridge, which is responsible for more than half of North Korea's trade with China, as a way to punish the regime in Pyongyang.

US President Donald Trump told South Korea's presidential envoy this week that Washington is willing to try to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis through engagement, but under the right conditions, South Korea's foreign ministry said yesterday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday said he was willing to normalise ties with South Korea following tensions over the installation of a U.S. anti-missile system last month.

Lee earlier told reporters in Beijing that Moon hopes to sit down with Xi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Germany in July as well as on August 24, which marks the 25th anniversary of bilateral relations.

He added that China hopes South Korea's new government will "correct the problems" and take measures as soon as possible.

Lee said the ROK acknowledged that the deployment of THAAD has harmed ROK-China mutual trust and exchanges, and fully understands China's reasonable concern over the issue.

Japan "wants to coordinate closely with the new South Korean administration to tackle a variety of issues and establish a future-oriented relationship", Kishida told Moon.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who officially assumed office on May 10, has repeatedly criticized the previous government under impeached leader Park Geun-hye for agreeing to host the THAAD system without seeking parliamentary approval.

In addition, there has also been a decline in Chinese sales of South Korean auto manufacturers Hyundai and Kia, as well as other protests.

No doubt, considering the threatening nature of North Korea, which is certainly rising day by day, it is more important for the US and South Korea to improve their ties as quick as possible.
