Lakers 'confident' they can sign Paul George, won't trade pick for him

Pacers&apos Paul George addresses Lakers rumours

Players qualify if they make the All-NBA team the year before the extension or are named Most Valuable Player or Defensive Player of the Year.

He could theoretically make an All-NBA team next year, and the Pacers would be able to offer him a super-max deal as he enters free agency, increasing their odds to keep him. Select media members vote on All-NBA teams, which essentially put George's future earnings and his future with the Pacers on the line. This applies to players finishing their rookie-scale extensions, which is the case for both Hayward and George.

George isn't the first player to be affected by this quirk of the CBA.

Whether or not this new wrinkle means that players who do not get selected to All-NBA teams will be more likely to be traded, or allowed to walk, is yet to be determined. There was speculation this year that a team like the Boston Celtics would make a move for the former All-Star, but that never came to be. But in the big scheme of things, the team and Paul George have an undeniable mutual interest.

It has been rumored that George wants to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, who have the No. 2 pick in this year's Draft, as well as other young players that could help the Pacers build a young core that already includes 21 year old Myles Turner.

Many in the National Basketball Association world believed that if the Pacers could offer George the DPE, it would be hard for him to turn down so much money (the goal of the rule).

"But after making it all the way back from his horrific leg break in the summer of 2014, and threatening to unseat the great LeBron James in those back-to-back Heat-Pacers conference finals, George finds himself more focused on legacy than ever".

That would give Hayward another season to make All-NBA and earn DPE eligibility for Utah to sign him long term. Trades for Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook also circulated.

It was George's best shooting year of his career, making 46 percent of his shots from the field. This isn't something to get up in arms over, but Paul was the more deserving player. Nobody really stood out, so going with Jordan's two-way importance on a good Clippers team shouldn't cause any outrage.
