Lexi Thompson shoots 65 day after sky diving with Navy Seals

Defending champion Aria Jutanugarn watches her tee shot on the ninth hole during the first round of the Kingsmill Championship LPGA golf tournament in Williamsburg Va. Thursday

USA star Lexi Thompson fired a bogey-free six-under par 65 to stretch her lead to three strokes after Friday's second round of the LPGA Kingsmill Championship.

Thompson is playing in her third event since she lost the first major of the year, the ANA Inspiration, in a playoff after a television viewer called in a rules violation and she was assessed a penalty.

Thompson, who started on the back nine, birdied the par-4 11th and made her lone bogey of the round at the par-3 17th.

At 12 under overall, she's three shots ahead of Gerina Piller (67) and four ahead of Rolex world No. 1 Lydia Ko (67) and Candie Kung (66).

Kang changed her short-stick approach for Thursday's opening round and shot a 1-over 72.

“The second nine was pretty insane, ” Thompson said. Ko, a 20-year-old from New Zealand, climbed into contention with her second consecutive 67. "I hit some great shots and rolled a few good putts, so definitely helps out my confidence".

"I don't really look at the rankings myself", Ko said.

While the Kiwi hasn't hit the high standards of previous years, with at least three wins in each of her three full seasons on tour, she has had five top 10s and a runner-up finish last month in Hawaii. Hit the fairway, hit the green, make the putt.

Piller stumbled late to fall back but matched Thompson's strong start with a birdie at the par-5 third, then three birdies in a row starting at the ninth.

"It's just a good golf course for me", she said. "But I just love the shape of the golf course, and it's in flawless shape for us once again this year, and probably the best I've seen it". Chun made double bogey on her first hole but played the next 17 in 7-under-par. Just happy to be under par and looking forward to tomorrow.”. "Now I know which events I am going to play and mostly I will be in the field more than out of the field", she said. She is taking advantage of a lot of birdie opportunities. It's always nice to walk out of your room and the 9th hole is right there and you can walk out to the putting green.

Lincicome had five birdies in a bogey-free round.
