Opening of Inglewood NFL stadium pushed back to 2020

Opening Of Rams (And Chargers!) New Stadium Delayed A Year Thanks To The Rain

The 70,000-seat stadium was initially scheduled to be ready in time for the 2019 National Football League season, but thanks to a surfeit of rain the opening will be delayed until the start of the 2020 season, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The delay is due to record-setting rainfall from January through March in the Los Angeles area, per the Chargers. The complex also includes plans for a hotel, retail space, office space and a 6,000-seat entertainment venue. One lost season will have a considerable ripple effect for LA and the NFL.

Demoff said Thursday that the process with the National Football League and uniform-maker Nike had begun and that the Rams are eligible to rebrand in 2019. They've hindered the extensive excavation necessary to complete the large project. Hooker underwent surgery in late January to fix two injuries suffered last season, a torn labrum and a hernia.

When the Rams returned to L.A.in 2016, they came with the promise of a new stadium that would be built in Inglewood. "And there was a time, at the peak of it, that we had 12 to 15 feet of water in the hole". The Rams planned to move into their new digs for the 2019 season, so it's obviously a bit of a bummer that they'll be stuck in the LA Memorial Coliseum for another season. Climate research conducted before construction began allotted for 30 days of wiggle room for rain, but a six-month stretch from October through April produced 120 percent the amount of rain for a typical year.

Meanwhile, the recently-relocated Chargers will now have to play at the smallish StubHub center in Carson for three seasons instead of two.

"Our focus is always on the fan experience", said A.G. Spanos, President of Business Operations.

In terms of the current state of the stadium's construction site, the Rams noted that "the stadium bowl is 90 feet deep and fully excavated".

So Thursday was a day of bad news all around in L.A., with the end result being that the primary reason for the relocation of both teams won't be available to be utilized by anyone for a full year longer than previously expected. The poor weather, the tight schedule and the fact that two teams will play out of the facility - which means it had to be ready from the start and can't count on the cushion of early road games - pretty much made the timeline impossible.
