Police officer killed in Arkansas

Arkansas deputy among 3 dead suspect in standoff with police

Mainhart was a law enforcement officer in Yell County for five years after having been a police officer in West Memphis, Arkansas, for more than 20 years.

According to the Arkansas State Police, there is an active manhunt underway in Yell County near Dardanelle. Bowden faces three Capital Murder charges, one for each of their deaths and a third charge for Yell County Sheriff's Office Lt. Kevin Mainhart. Authorities allege that Bowden shot and killed the deputy during the traffic stop.

A man suspected of gunning down an Arkansas sheriff's deputy and killing two other people surrendered after a five-hour standoff with police, authorities said.

Authorities have identified the two people who were killed along with a sheriff's deputy in rural Arkansas before the suspect was captured. "He was very respected", Yell County Sheriff Bill Gilkey said.

Police released a name of the suspect Thursday, but it became clear later in the day it may not have been correct.

Police say Mainhart was shot after he pulled over a vehicle believed to be linked to a disturbance call at a home where the two female victims were found dead in the yard.

The 46-year-old deputy was pronounced dead on the scene after a passing driving discovered he had been shot. The suspect's father said the woman, who was apparently being held hostage, is Bowden's girlfriend.

When officers found Mainhart's body, they also found the bodies of two other people. The proclamation referenced Mainhart's history as a law enforcement officer in Arkansas as well as his service as a security forces officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin said Mainhart's "senseless" death has affected so many in the state, and "today, Arkansans collectively grieve for the loss of Lt. Mainhart in the line of duty and recognize his sacrifice, the sacrifice of his family and the danger faced by law enforcement on a daily basis".
