Twitter Updates Privacy Policy, Ends 'Do Not Track' Support

How to see what Twitter thinks it knows about you

Twitter has introduced a new privacy policy, with some significant changes taking effect next month.

It's equal parts amusing and alarming, but you can see how Twitter perceives your personal interests, how many advertisers have you in their cross hairs, which apps Twitter knows are on your device, and where it thinks you've been.

Twitter also has a new Your Data section that lets you see the demographic, geographic and other ad-targeting data it has collected about you. You just have to keep in mind to actually do it since they're going to to opt you into these changes in a month's time.

The policy is centered around tracking its users and tailoring ads and content to fit their interests. That's the long and short of the social network's announcements on May 18, 2017. Twitter has discontinued support of the "Do Not Track" browser preference that allowed users to opt out of cross-site tracking on websites. While we had hoped that our support for Do Not Track would spur industry adoption, an industry-standard approach to Do Not Track did not materialise. Twitter is able to monitor any website you visit when you're logged in to Twitter and visiting a site with a Twitter button or an embedded tweet.

Instead of 10, Twitter will keep your web information for 30 days now. It says that the tailored ads you already see will improve and that "we've given you even more control" over your data.

This change is not impacting those living in the European Union or member states of the European Free Trade Association: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The good news is that Twitter gives you the option to revoke access. Another update in the settings is that it now reveals your interests and you can manually turn all of these off if you want to.

Ten days' worth of browsing info is already enough for Twitter to have figured out lots of things about me. On Wednesday, it announced an update to its privacy policy, which includes Your Twitter Data, which allows users to view and modify information about them that advertisers can see.

Heading to Twitter's blog though, the company outlined a more granular point-form summary of the changes heading to the platform in the coming weeks. The setting will also include how Twitter personalised your micro-blogging platform experience and whether information was shared through certain partnerships. This will land you on a page where you can enable or disable Twitter's access to your information.

Additionally, Twitter is disabling Do Not Track for those users who have it enabled in their web browsers. Based on each of your clicks (and taps) the services can build up a profile of what you're likely to be interested in. The social network effectively studies its users' habits, building up profiles of likes, dislikes, hobbies and other advertising-friendly information.
