Woman Is Fighting for Her Life After Eating Gas Station Nachos

One woman has botulism from eating cheese at a gas station in California.

California officials say five people were hospitalized after eating nacho cheese from a Sacramento gas station.

According to ABC 7, Sacramento County health investigators have linked the other cases of botulism to the same food and fuel stop.

Investigations are ongoing as to what caused the illness, but officials are now putting it down to a batch of nacho cheese.

The bacteria from botulism can cause paralysis, and even death.

A Sacramento mother was one of at least five people hospitalized last month after contracting botulism from tainted nacho cheese bought at a gas station.

Kelly has been in intensive care for three weeks and has lost most of her body's functions, including the ability to communicate, the network reported.

The condition is severe as she also can not see well so her family help her see either by using a tape to keep her eyes slightly open or lifting her eyelids.

She was put on a ventilator the next day and admitted to the intensive care unit, where she remains. She went to Stutter Medical Center, only to be sent home hours later.

The report continues that Kelly's partner rushed her back to the emergency room when she began vomiting and having difficulty breathing that same evening. By Friday, that number had increased to nine with a tenth person being tested.

She purchased some nacho cheese which she drizzled over a bag of Doritos.

Clark stated that "human mistakes" are behind the creation of a flawless environment for the formation of "botulinum toxin".

WebMD recommends boiling home-canned goods for 10 minutes before eating, as well as properly storing foods and serving baked potatoes while they're hot, in order to prevent botulism.

Now that the source of the outbreak has been determined, the investigation will turn to the cause and seek to answer if the gas station mishandled the food items or if the manufacturers or distributors are at fault. So far, preliminary data seems to be pointing to the nacho cheese sold at the gas station in Walnut Grove that is the likely source of the botulism. "That's an essential question". Kelly's family has filed a negligence lawsuit on her behalf.

In 2014, only 161 cases of botulism were confirmed and just 15 of those were food-borne illness. They've also set up a GoFundMe page for help with the medical bills.
