The Muslim Council of Britain said that in "an unprecedented move" they have refused to perform the traditional Islamic prayer - a ritual normally performed for every Muslim regardless of their actions - and called on all Muslim leaders to follow.
"Consequently, and in light of other such ethical principles which are quintessential to Islam, we will not perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer for the perpetrators". While the government's Communities Secretary Sajid Javid, himself a Muslim, has also said the UK's Islamic community must do more than simply condemn terror attacks, echoing Prime Minister Theresa May's belief that Britain has been far too tolerant of extremism.
"Once again we come together, to stand united against those who try to divide us", said the chairman of the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre, Muhammad Habibur-Rahman. We are deeply hurt that a spate of terror attacks have been committed in our country once more by murderers who seek to gain religious legitimacy for their actions.
This only serves to demonstrate how "utterly misguided and distant the terrorists are" from the Islamic faith, the signatories said, adding that the "reprehensible actions" of the attackers has neither religious legitimacy nor their sympathy. The three attackers were then shot by police who arrived on the scene, Fox News reported. He said he was encouraged by the imams and said that the decision means "they're condemning their souls" since the funeral prayer asks for forgiveness of the dead.
In Saturday's attack, three men, wearing fake suicide vests, mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge in a van, before slashing and stabbing revelers in Borough Market, a bustling district of late-night bars and restaurants.
On Monday, former police commander for engagement, Mak Chishty, called for "a step-change - a different direction and a different movement to counter the scourge of terrorism, extremism and hatred that we have in our communities at present". "We are now asking questions to understand how extremism and hatred has taken hold within some elements of our own communities".
According to police, 12 more people have been arrested in connection to the attacks.
The country's official terror threat level had been set at "critical" in the parlous days after the Manchester concert bombing on May 22 that killed 22 people - reflecting a judgment that an attack might be imminent because accomplices with similar bombs might be on the loose.
