Robert Kubica admits to 'mixed feelings' after F1 test

Robert Kubica of Poland waves to the crowd during the finishing ceremony of the FIA World Rally Championship in Great Britain on Nov.r 15 2015 in Deeside Wales

Robert Kubica will test an F1 vehicle for the very first time since a rally accident halted the talented Pole's career in Grand Prix racing in February of 2011.

The accident partially severed his right arm and, despite making a remarkable recovery, he was still left with reduced mobility in his wrist and forearm that prevented an immediate return to single seaters.

Fernando Alonso and Daniil Kvyat have been the first Formula 1 drivers to give a nod to Robert Kubica's private Renault test in Valencia.

The former Formula 1 Grand Prix victor took part in a one-day private F1 test with Renault running a 2012-spec Lotus E20 in Valencia and completing 115 laps. He tested several single-seater open-wheel racecars this year, including a Formula E auto at Donington and a GP3 vehicle at Franciacorta, the latter track featuring two tight hairpins that require a lot of steering lock-something Kubica's arm formerly made hard but which he was delighted to find was no longer a problem. His comments and feedback, however, were like turning the clock back for all of us. It is a tricky thing to jump into an F1 vehicle after six years and it was a great performance from him. It was a one-off event for Robert.

At his peak, Robert Kubica was one of the rising stars of Formula 1. "His time with Renault was cut short so abruptly and we perceived such a nice future with him. The team was in Valencia with Sergey Sirotkin, it was the flawless opportunity to offer Robert a day in the auto and contribute our way to his recovery". Renault has said it was just a one-off, and Kubica said he had "mixed feelings" about the day, saying: "I am proud with what I achieved today, but also it shows what I have lost".

There may even be an opportunity to get into a Formula One seat this year, as one of the Renault drivers, Jolyon Palmer, didn't really show any signs of brilliance in his rookie season last year and has been significantly underperforming in 2017, to the point that keeping him may prove to be a liability in the championship battle.

"I have mixed feelings".

"I don't know what the future will bring", Kubica added.

"It is a tricky thing to jump into an F1 vehicle after six years and it was a great performance from him. Renault was the first manufacturer to test me in 2005 and I appreciated this new opportunity".

Renault F1 team sporting director Alan Permane praised Kubica's efforts after such a long time away.
