Edelman, Patriots reach deal on multi-year contract, Schefter reports

Patriots

It's rare for the Patriots to extend players on the wrong side of 30, but they're confident that Edelman will have a role to play for a few more years.

Julian Edelman has been a key part of the New England Patriots offense ever since the departure of Wes Welker.

The agreement is a multi-year contract extension, Schefter reported.

The Patriots thought outside of the box in 2009 when they drafted him in the seventh round (232nd overall) and converted him from college quarterback to National Football League punt returner/receiver. However, with this extension, Edelman will be signed to the Patriots for the next coming seasons. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound shifty receiver was instrumental in the franchise's fifth Super Bowl winning season, recording 21 receptions for 342 yards in three playoff games. Edelman has shown a passion for catching the quick screen pass and running angry up the field. As a result of the newly inked pact, Edelman will remain in New England until at least the 2019 season.

Though he just turned 31, it would seem that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick thinks Edelman isn't exiting his prime any time soon. Look for Edelman to continue to play at a high level in New England until he reaches his mid-30s.
