Kia has released a rendering of its forthcoming small crossover, the Stonic, ahead of its European release later this year.

Kia says the vehicle blends sharp horizontal feature lines with softer sculpted surfaces and brings compact dimensions and a low centre of gravity to the class. Stonic targeting young drivers has the "design, price tag, mileage, and drive experience optimal for 20s and 30s and first-time auto buyers", said the company in releasing the rendering. In the same vein, Kia promises that the Stonic will have a relatively low centre of gravity, which will result in better dynamics.

There are no interior shots yet but Kia has promised the Stonic will be "the most customisable Kia ever, inside and out" so expect a range of infotainment options and trim choices.

Design boss Peter Schreyer previously admitted the Stonic would not veer too much away from the design identity of existing models.

Kia was Australia's fastest growing mainstream vehicle brand in 2016, selling over 42,000 cars for a growth of 27% over the previous year. Other design elements include lots of sharp horizontal feature lines setting off softer surface sculpting, all wrapped up in a compact package.

The cabin echoes the appearance of the exterior, with straight lines, smooth surfaces and geometric design forms. Details are thin on the ground, but Kia has already gone on record to say all of its models will be equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto by the end of the year.
