New Trump FBI pick represented Christie in Bridgegate case

Trump to nominate Christopher Wray for FBI director

His choice will be particularly closely scrutinised after the president fired James Comey from the position last month.

According to The Daily Beast, the White House communications staff and senior staffers found out about the Wray pick like everyone else: via Twitter.

Not only has he represented in defense for Fortune 500 companies and white-collar crimes, but he was the personal attorney for well-known Republican Gov. Chris Christie during the 2013 "Bridgegate" investigation, involving lane closures at the George Washington Bridge. That probe is now being overseen by a special counsel, former FBI Director Robert Mueller. "He won't be pushed around by Trump or [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions like [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein was", the attorney tells Newsweek. Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford said in a statement that "we will evaluate Christopher Wray's qualifications" in the coming weeks.

Five hours after Trump's announcement, Grassley issued a statement saying, "I'm grateful for the President's thorough consultation throughout this process. In the coming weeks, we will evaluate Christopher Wray's qualifications to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation and his plans for our security and law enforcement".

"He's got to stay out of the politics and remain independent if he wants to retain the faith of the rank and file", says Jeffrey Ringel, a former coordinating supervisory special agent in the FBI's NY office.

In an early morning two-sentence tweet, Trump said he meant to nominate Christopher Wray, a high-ranking official in George W. Bush's Justice Department who represented New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in the Bridgegate scandal. Ex-U.S. Department of Justice officials of both parties lauded the former prosecutor on Wednesday, and former colleagues told Law360 that Wray would bring a cool head, maturity and superb judgment.

He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2003 and led the criminal division for two years before returning to King & Spalding as a partner.

He will take the reins of the agency as investigations continue into possible collusion between Trump campaign figures and Russian Federation, which is accused of cyber-hacks to influence the result.

He said he looked forward to leading "an extraordinary group of men and women who have dedicated their careers to protecting this country". Two former Christie aids were convicted for closing the lanes to punish a mayor who wouldn't endorse Christie. "Details to follow", Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.

Wray worked for the Justice Department under President George W. Bush.
