Teenager killed in search operation by gov't forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Kashmir protests

A youth was killed and at least 12 others injured on Tuesday in massive clashes between the security forces and protesters in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.

According to reports and witnesses, amid sloganeering, three rounds of funeral prayers were held to accommodate mourners who had poured into the native village of the slain student to attend his funeral prayers. Locals said he was 22 years old.

The trend, which emerged from south Kashmir in 2014, gained momentum across Kashmir following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani by security forces in July past year. As the stone-pelting intensified, the forces opened fire injuring many civilians. "He was hit in the chest by the bullet and was brought dead to the hospital", a senior official said.

During clashes, one person identified as Aadil Ahmad Magray was critically injured, following which he succumbed to his injuries. They also blocked National Highway.

All schools and colleges were shut down as a preventive measure against any protest by students.

Authorities on Wednesday suspended mobile internet services in the Kashmir Valley following the death of a youth in a security force firing in Shopian district.

They also asked people from south Kashmir areas to march towards Adil's residence to express solidarity with the bereaved family. "They were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba", he said.
