IndyCar race at Texas red-flagged after big crash

It was a war of attrition at a fierce 220 miles per hour on the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway track in the "wild west" that lived up to its nickname.

Will Power was victorious in a crash-filled Rain Guard 600 Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway.

Also for Chip Ganassi Racing, Tony Kanaan was fourth in the No. 10 Honda at 222.007 miles per hour while Max Chilton was sixth in the No. 8 Honda at 221.654 miles per hour.

Simon Pagenaud, of France, heads into the front stretch during the IndyCar auto race at Texas Motor Speedway, Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Drivers came to Texas concerned that pack racing would lead to problems.

Drive Charlie Kimball poses with the pole aware in victory lane at Texas Motor Speedway, Friday, June 9, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas.

"I'm so stoked to win in my second home where my wife is from, Texas".

Sixty-six of the 248-laps were under caution, plus a red flag that stopped the race for half an hour, due to numerous accidents. Kimball is the pole-sitter for Saturday's race.

Kimball's Chip Ganassi Racing team-mate Scott Dixon took second place, while Alexander Rossi continued his good oval qualifying form by securing third place for the start.

Josef Newgarden was one of the many retirements, after the Penske racer tried to run three-wide earlier in the race before losing control of his auto and slamming into the wall.

Despite the crash, Dixon finished ninth and retained the unofficial championship lead after nine of 17 races with 326 points.

Pistons great Dennis Rodman headed to North Korea for another visit
Rodman faced criticism for his trips and for his description of Kim as a "very good guy". "It's not about politics". At the time, Mr Trump tweeted: "The only American who has met with the North Korean man child is Dennis Rodman ".

The final caution came when Sato, driving the same vehicle in which he won the Indianapolis 500 in two weeks ago and pushing for another win, got his left side slightly into the grass on the front stretch with five laps to go.

Polesitter Charlie Kimball completed just 41 laps before an oil leak sidelined him and sent the No. 83 machine to the garage. He was on the white line, driver's left, and then, just heading into (Turn) 3, came halfway across the racetrack and just pushed me right into Mikhail. Power led the Chevrolet camp in ninth after lapping at 221.277 miles per hour in the No. 12 Team Penske entry.

Simon Pagenaud was third, followed by last year's victor Graham Rahal and Gaby Chaves.

"Sato was all over the place and was going to crash someone", Pagenaud said. The inevitable result was several wrecks, none bigger than the one on Lap 152, when James Hinchcliffe was squeezed up the track by Tony Kanaan. That put Hinchcliffe in the middle of three-wide, and he made contact with his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports teammate Mikhail Aleshin.

"He wasn't driving smart, or respectfully", Hinchcliffe said.

In all, Kanaan, Hinchcliffe, Aleshin, JR Hildebrand, Ed Carpenter, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Ed Jones, Tristan Vautier and Carlos Munoz were involved. I was just kind of anxious to get in the auto and see what it would be, but after three or four laps it felt OK. Vehicle owner Dale Coyne went up to Kanaan's auto while it was lined up on pit road during the red flag, then leaned into the cockpit and said something. Kanaan was immediately assessed a 20-second "stop and hold" penalty by IndyCar Race Control for "avoidable contact" and "blocking".

All drivers involved were evaluated and released from the infield care center. There were 23 lead changes among seven drivers, and nine cautions for the night.

"(The team team has) had my back all year long through the good, the bad, the ugly.

During stops on the ensuing caution, Sato got pinned into the wall during a pit road collision that damaged the front wing of his auto.

Meanwhile initial pole sitter Charlie Kimball's race ended in misery after the first round of pit-stops, with the Chip Ganassi racer suffering a mechanical issue and joining the long list of retirements. The second caution flag of the race came out on lap 91 when Helio Castroneves got into the turn 2 wall because of a flat tire.

The IndyCar Series heads to Road America in two weeks for the KOHLER Grand Prix.
