Liberal Democrats to elect deputy leader this month

Brian Paddick announced he is stepping down in a post on Twitter this afternoon

Britain's Liberal Democrats leader Tim Farron announced his resignation on Wednesday, citing scrutiny of his religious views over gay rights during the recent general election campaign.

In a speech to staff at the party's London headquarters, Mr Farron said: "The consequences of the focus on my faith is that I have found myself torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader".

The announcement follows the resignation of his home affairs spokesman Lord Brian Paddick over the leader's views on gay marriage.

The Lib Dem leader also admitted he said he should have dealt "more wisely" with questions relating to his faith during the election campaign, including his views on gay sex, which became a millstone around Farron's neck during the campaign. I felt guilty that this focus was distracting attention from our campaign, obscuring our message.

Mr Farron said he stepped down because he found himself torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader.

Nominations were opened following a meeting of the parliamentary party on Monday, with MPs needing to secure a proposer and seconder. "Sometimes my answers could have been wiser".

Journalists have every right to ask what they see fit.

The decision comes one year after the Committee's decision in Mellet v. In November, the State offered to pay her €30,000 in compensation.

Lib Dem leader says he is stepping down because of problems balancing his faith and his politics.

Surrounded by party colleagues including Vince Cable, he added: "I seem to have been the subject of suspicion because of what I believe and who my faith is in".

In which case we are kidding ourselves if we think we yet live in a tolerant, liberal society.

The Liberal Democrats, with Nick Clegg at the helm, helped David Cameron's Conservatives form a government in a coalition agreement after a hung parliament result in the 2010 election.

In a Q&A with PinkNews before the election, Mr Farron said: "I am a proud advocate of LGBT equality and have a track record that demonstrates that".

'In the words of Isaac Watts it would have to be something "so awesome, so divine, (it) demands my heart, my life, my all"'.
