Over 200 London firefighters battle North Kensington blaze in 27-story high-rise

Michael Paramaseevan, who lives on the seventh floor of the Grenfell Tower apartment building with his partner and young daughter, told the BBC he ignored official safety advice to stay in his apartment in the event of a fire.

The local fire department was alerted just before 1 A.M., and flames could be seen for over 10 hours after the London Fire Brigade arrived. "I think he might have just had some broken bones and bruises".

"We are dealing with a really serious fire that spread throughout the building", a spokesman for the fire brigade said.

"If it wasn't for that, there would have been more casualties", he said.

He said: "It was rapid, the fire was growing well out of control".

Cladding had been added to the outside of the building, blamed by some residents for helping the fire to spread so quickly. More than 20 ambulance crews were on the scene, along with 200 firefighters and 45 fire engines.

"My first though was "how would I feel if I was in my room and the place caught fire and I lost everything".

Texas congressman's staffer among those wounded in shooting
The Republican baseball team holds practice every morning at 6:30am ET at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Hodgkinson opened fire shortly after 7 a.m. and top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was among those injured.

This is a major fire that's affected all floors of the 24-story structure from the second floor upwards". "In my 29 years of career as a firefighter, I have never ever seen anything of this scale".

The causes of the fire, one of the biggest in London in memory, were not immediately known. A witness told Reuters that she feared not all the residents had escaped the fire.

In a blog post in November, it accused the Kensington and Chelsea Tenants' Management Organization (KCTMO), which manages the housing block on behalf of the local authority, of allowing "dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation".

Fire brigades will reportedly continue to battle the blaze at the Grenfell Tower block throughout the night. The group has raised concerns about testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment and blocked emergency access to the site.

"However, what we do know is that fires of this type are rare".

"All our warnings fell on deaf ears and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time", the group said on its website on Wednesday.

"But if we had stayed in the flat we would have perished", he said. Because of the early hour of this fire, many residents were home asleep, reports Fox & Friends live on Wednesday morning.
