Putin, Saudi King Discuss Qatar Diplomatic Crisis

Analysts say Qatar Airways’ position as a major transcontinental carrier is now threatened

Yemen, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mauritania and the eastern-based government in divided Libya also announced a break in relations with Doha, while Jordan and Djibouti said they would lower the level of diplomatic contacts with Qatar.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slammed the Gulf's "inhumane" blockade of Qatar saying the action is contrary to Islamic values in a speech on Tuesday.

Erdogan was to hold three-way phone talks on the crisis later Tuesday with French President Emmanuel Macron and Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

"Qatar is not the one who supports terrorism, quite the opposite".

More Arab and Muslim-majority African countries later joined the diplomatic blockade, even as several powers have called for resolving the crisis.

Turkey's parliament last week approved deploying troops to a Turkish base in Qatar in what was seen as a show of support for its embattled ally.

MONTREAL/DUBAI Qatar has asked the United Nations' aviation agency to intervene in an airspace rights' dispute with three Gulf states following an escalating diplomatic row and trade blockade, two sources familiar with the matter said on Monday.

"Without the support of Turkey and Qatar it would not be possible for Syria to push back Daesh (IS)", Erdogan said, referring to Ankara and Doha's backing of some of the same Syrian rebel groups. "It's as if a death penalty decision has been taken for Qatar".

As the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, Qatar's wealth has allowed it to crown its small Gulf peninsula with skyscrapers. Oman has stayed out of the conflict.

The agency was commenting in reaction to remarks made by Qatar Airways' chief executive that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain were violating global law by shutting out Qatari flights.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed hopes for a swift resolution of the crisis engulfing the energy-rich nation of Qatar.

He also criticised Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both members of ICAO's governing council, for shutting down the airline's offices.

Describing the occasional anti-Iran remarks by Saudi officials as a proof of their lack of knowledge about Iran and the region, Velayati said the kingdom is incapable of even ensuring its own security, let alone pose a threat to Iran.

Trump last week waded into the worst Gulf Arab rift in years and praised the pressure on Qatar, which Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain accuse of supporting Iran and funding Islamist groups, charges Doha denies.
