World Blood Donor Day: Don't wait until disaster strikes. Give blood

Every year, on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day.

Aigboje Ikhuoria reports that some residents in Benin City donated blood as part of the commemoration of the day.

"At my Suva office I sit next to a man who has donated blood nearly 100 times, imagine how many lives he has saved", Ms Ambler said.

"I never think of blood donation as hard work, as it's saving people's lives", Zheng said.

Blood donors must be free of blood-borne pathogens, such as HIV and hepatitis B, to protect patients from infection.

Our analysis shows that blood donations relative to a country's population are strongly correlated with wealth. The Haemoglobin level in donor's blood should be 12g/dL. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. He informed that the event was established in 2004 and is aimed to serve, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products.

On World Blood Donor Day, Thiruvananthapuram governor P Sathasivam will inaugurate the celebrations organised by Terumo Penpol in association with All Kerala Donors Society at Vylopilly Samskrithi Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram on 14 June at 10 am, media reports said. Haemoglobin is a protein of the red blood cells that gives our blood its red colour and also carries oxygen throughout the body.

"Whenever I could I've called into the blood bank".

Although the day comes in the midst of National Blood Donor Week, Nicole McMahon, territory manager for Canadian Blood Services, said donations are now lacking. Blood donation is a gift of life.

"Think about if that was your family member laying there or themselves and how they would want that blood available", says Sue Rickey.

Wasylynka said O-type blood is most in need because it can be donated to any blood group.

Currently, CBS reserves are sitting around 12,000 units of blood - significantly below where reserves are usually kept around 20,000 to 25,000 units.

According to Pillay, a person can donate blood five times a year, but only after every 56 days. In crisis or emergency situation, the natural human response is 'What can I do?
