London fire: First victim named as Mohammed Alhajali

The first victim of the Grenfell Tower inferno has been named as Syrian refugee Mohammad al-Haj Ali, as the grieving friends he made in the United Kingdom have lamented the country "failed him" after he "came here for a better life".

The 23-year-old was studying civil engineering at the University of the West of London. Omar is believed to have survived the fire and is now being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

He said: "Mohammed undertook a unsafe journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom, in his own home".

"A Syrian refugee in the UK, Mohammed passed away in the Grenfell Tower fire yesterday", the campaign said in a Facebook post Thursday.

He made frantic calls to friends and relatives back in Syria, including a message that said: "The fire is here now, goodbye".

"Mohammad came to this country for safety and the United Kingdom failed to protect him".

Tributes have been paid to a "kind and charitable" refugee who was named as one of the first victims of the devastating Grenfell Tower blaze. "We absolutely agree that a thorough investigation into Building Regulations should take place immediately".

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends".

A friend from the Syrian community wrote on Facebook that al-Haj Ali "had escaped death from Syrian and came to the United Kingdom to find a new life".

Grenfell Tower, which is located in the Lancaster West Estate in West London, was home to 600 people. "To Allah we belong and to him we shall return".

His brother Omar Alhajali was also caught up in the blaze but was found in hospital in a stable condition.

At least 17 people have died in the massive fire which ravaged London's skyline, but the Metropolitan Police said the death toll is expected to increase yet further.

The tower block went up in flames early Wednesday in what London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton described as an "unprecedented incident".
