Melbourne terrorist killed by cops was on parole

On Monday, Khayre had arranged to meet the woman at his apartment in Brighton through an escort service before taking her hostage, reported BBC.

Australian police yesterday shot dead the man who had taken the woman hostage and said they were investigating whether the incident was terror-related.

The escort escaped unharmed but three police were hurt in the firefight, although their injuries were not life-threatening.

After the deadly attack, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack by that the gunman was one of its fighters.

Since September 2014, police have foiled a dozen terrorist plots and made 63 arrests, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Monday.

"What is clear here is that we face a growing threat from Islamist terrorism in Australia in our region and around the world".

He said Victoria Police's Counter Terrorism Command was recently created under Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton and "that was the right investment to make".

Police are searching Khayre's mother's home in Roxburgh Park, while the bomb squad is searching the Buckingham Serviced Apartments on Bay St in Brighton. "He was recognized as a refugee under Australia's humanitarian migration program and later became a citizen, police said".

Police said the gunman, Yacqub Khayre, had a long criminal history.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the violence.

Why is Dennis Rodman Back in North Korea?
Such direct consultations between the two governments are rare as they do not have formal diplomatic relations. A North Korean foreign ministry official said Warmbier was released and left the country Tuesday morning.

Authorities had responded to reports of an explosion at the building - which turned out to be a gunshot - in the affluent beach suburb of Brighton and arrived to find a dead body in the foyer. Police have not revealed whether she and the gunmen were known to each other.

Khayre had served jail time over a violent burglary in 2012 and had been on parole for arson since November.

Two male officers were taken to hospital for treatment while another was treated at the scene.

Through its Amaq News Agency, the global terror group, Islamic State, identified the gunman as one of its fighters.

Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the Melbourne hostage attack, saying the gunman was a "soldier" of the militant group.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the man spoken to by negotiators inside the building came out about 6pm and opened fire, hitting three police.

In December 2010, Yacqup Kayre was found not guilty for his involvement in a plot to kill military personnel at Holsworthy army base in Sydney's south-west.

Prime Minister Turnbull described the attack as "shocking" and a "cowardly crime".

'He appears to (have been) in the wrong place at the wrong time, ' Mr Ashton said.
