Chicago girls shot on school playground latest in spate of gun incidents

The shooting occurred at about 1:45 p.m. outside Warren Elementary School at East 92nd Street and South Jeffery Avenue in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said.

Langford says he believes both girls are students. Johnson said, disgust evident in his voice.

According to reports, the children, ages 7 and 13, ran inside the school after hearing gunshots.

"This makes me sick", Johnson said.

Police spokesman Frank Giancamilli says the injuries aren't considered life threatening.

The hospital says the girls' families have asked that no details about their conditions be released. The older students ran back to the picnic and the gunfire followed them.

The school has about 300 students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. He says the girls were taken to Comer Children's Hospital. The Chicago Public Schools website describes it as "a magnet cluster school with a focus on math and science".

Shortly after, police stopped a vehicle near the school they thought was linked to the shooting and questioned the occupants.

According to a CNN tally, at least 16 people were shot in Chicago between 3 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday.
