Oregon Adds A New Gender Option To Its Driver's Licenses: X

Oregon just became first state to allow residents to identify their gender as non-binary on state ID

Jamie Shupe expects to stand out front of an Oregon DMV early next month and cry.

According to multiple reports, OR became on Thursday the first state in the U.S.to allow non-binary people to identify as such on state IDs, driver's licenses and permits, awarding a massive civil rights victory to non-binary people and LGBTQ activists.

Activists hope an "X" gender designation is on the way in other states, and eventually, for US passports.

The new Department of Motor Vehicles policy, enacted Thursday, allows individuals to identify as "X" rather than "M" or "F" - a move that LGBTQ advocates say will serve to validate the identities of transgender, genderqueer, and intersex Oregonians.

OR has become the first state to legally recognise non-binary people.

Residents can now freely change their gender on their driver's licenses without a doctor's note saying they are transgender or non-binary.

Basic Rights Oregon is the state's largest nonprofit lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer advocacy group. "It's something that we should do because it's the right thing to do".

Lambda Legal said that nationally, people have been harassed and even assaulted after presenting IDs to police, hospital workers, employers, airport staff, bank tellers and others that don't match their gender identity or expression.

The state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which held public hearings to debate the issue, said they received little opposition to the policy change, according to the Oregonian newspaper.

The ruling, which is believed to be the first of its kind, allowed Portland resident Jamie Shupe to mark that designation in a standard petition for change of sex.

While Oregon is the first state in the U.S.to recognize non-binary residents on IDs, this idea isn't new, according to Julie Rodriquez, communications manager of Basic Rights Oregon.

Australia and New Zealand have already have the option to choose "X" on their passports, and passport applicants in India can pick Male, Female or Eunuch.

Ultimately, the goal of gender activists is to add a third non-binary option on birth certificates, an idea now being debated in Canada and California. But the California Family Council opposes the bill, arguing that "government documents need to reflect biological facts for identification", the AP reported.

The DMV said it studied state laws, updated computer systems, worked with law enforcement and courts and changed administrative rules to implement the change and comply with the Multnomah Court's order.
