Search for Thai family after London tower block inferno

REUTERS/Peter Nicholls Police officers protect the entrance to the BBC building during a protest in central London following the fire that destroyed The Grenfell Tower block, in north Kensington, West London, Britain June 16, 2017.

When asked whether the final number of people who had been killed in the fire would likely be double or triple digits, Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said, "I'd like to hope that it isn't going to be triple figures".

Since Wednesday, six victims of the fire have been provisionally identified though Cundy warned there was a "risk that sadly we may not be able to identify everybody".

The Times reported that the type of cladding used on the building was banned in U.S. buildings taller than 40 feet (12.2 metres) because of fire safety fears.

Omar, 25, survived, but the brothers were separated as firemen tried to rescue them from burning building early Wednesday.

By contrast, Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's response to the deadly blaze was suggest the "requisitioning" some of the expensive empty homes of the Kensington elite to ensure that displaced residents have shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and authorities have refused to speculate on what could have started the blaze.

"We as the police, we investigate criminal offences - I am not sitting here and saying there are criminal offences that have been committed, that's why you do an investigation, to establish it".

"At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding to the tower".

They met volunteers, local residents and community representatives while visiting Westway Sports Centre in west London, near the burnt down 24-storey Grenfell Tower.

Grenfell Tower residents had expressed a series of concerns to the local council, including the lack of sprinklers and the fact that it had a single staircase - a common feature of 1970s tower blocks. "You get a lot of fragmentation of bodies, charring of bones and sometimes all that's left is ash", said Peter Vanezis, a professor of forensic medical sciences at Queen Mary University in London. The authorities appeared to have ignored multiple warnings that drew from the experience of fires in other properties under their control, simply because they were not constrained by the law and knew the tenants were powerless to do anything.

He received a number of hard questions, including one from a young child who reportedly asked, "How many children died?"

After her initial failure to engage with the public, the Prime Minister sought to make amends when she went to St Clement's Church, near the blaze, to meet locals and community leaders.

"(This aims) to give the victims the immediate support they need to care for themselves and for loved ones", May said.

One of the first victims was named as 23-year-old Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali, with the Syria Solidarity Campaign director Kareen El Beyrouty launching a campaign towards funeral costs.

Up to 600 people lived in the 120 apartments at Grenfell Tower.

Residents had long complained about fire safety risks at Grenfell Tower during a refurbishment project completed a year ago, but said their concerns went unheeded.

Questions are now being asked about the safety of the tower, as well as the cladding which was placed upon it in its recent refurbishment which may have helped the spread of the flames. A massive fire raced through the 24-story high-rise apartment building. And sorrow is quickly turning to anger over whether the building met fire and safety regulations.
