Mistrial declared in Cosby case after jury deadlocks again

Bill Cosby faces retrial on sexual assault charges

The mistrial was declared Saturday by Judge Steven T. O'Neill after the seven men and five women on the jury individually told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked "on all counts" after deliberating more than 52 hours over six days.

Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Constand, who is now living in Canada and is a massage therapist.

By now, Cosby should have been taking an extended victory lap - transitioning into life as "America's Granddad", while practicing the storytelling-driven standup style he turned into an art form. "Despite the fact that the jury could not come to a unanimous decision, our bad actor witness Andrea Constand was able to confront the defendant", said Steele. Overtly arrogant and collaborating with the District Attorney. Prosecutors have suggested he gave her something stronger, possibly quaaludes.

If convicted Cosby faces a potential 10 years behind bars.

The post United States judge declares mistrial in Cosby sex assault case appeared first on The Independent Uganda:. "We wanted an acquittal, but like the Rolling Stones song says, you can't always get what you want; sometimes you get what you need".

When the panel announced for a second time that they were deadlocked on Saturday morning, leading the judge to declare a mistrial, Allison dabbed tears from her eyes.

According to ABC News, the DA, Kevin Steele, described Cosby as a "calculating sexual predator, who not only drugged and assaulted Constand in 2004, but also recast the attack as consensual and romantic". He remained active at his alma mater Temple University.

Whatever happens now with Constand's case - whether prosectors retry the case, or they don't - the most important question that the trial leaves unanswered is this: When are we going to update our antiquated statutes of limitations - legal limits that a modern understanding of sexual assault should have forced us to rethink decades ago? The outcome is a blow to women, who are sexual assault victims, especially involving well-known celebrities.

"I want to thank the jury for their long days, their honest work", Cosby said.

The statement was prepared and signed by Camille Cosby and was read aloud by a member of the Cosby PR firm.

Little testimony about other accusations against Cosby was allowed in the Pennsylvania trial because of the strict standards for admitting evidence in criminal cases.

The portion of Constand's testimony where she talks about telephone calls she made to Cosby after she says he drugged and violated her.

There seems little doubt all this will be rehashed with prosecutors vowing to retry Cosby.

Gloria Allred, an attorney representing more than 30 Cosby accusers, welcomed the prosecutors' decision to seek a retrial.
