USA refuse to sign G7 pledge on 'irreversible' Paris climate accord

When announcing the US was pulling out of the Paris accord Trump said his administration would begin negotiations either to re-enter the deal or set up a new agreement on "terms that are fair to the United States".

At the G7 ministerial talks in Bologna, Trump's main envoy, Environmental Protection Agency director Scott Pruitt, left the talks to return to Washington only a few hours after his arrival.

Quite a number of states and municipalities have started to stand up against President Trump, on his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

The G7 environment ministers issued a final communique Monday after their two-day meeting, the first since the United States announced it was withdrawing from the Paris climate pact. Trump's plans to renegotiate a more favorable deal for the USA have been rebuffed by the leaders of Germany, France and Italy.

Already through the first day of works, however, it was quite clear the rift on climate between the US and their major allies was much likely to remain unchanged. The president is moving more of the job of combating the possible effects of global warming to the US private sector and the laboratory of the states, where it properly belongs.

He included Trudeau's visit to La Malbaie, Que., the site of the next G7 summit, where the prime minister expects to showcase Canada's commitment to fight climate change.

McKenna also reiterated on Monday that Canada can work with other players in the U.S.to curb emissions and find business opportunities for clean tech and other industries.

The account in Der Spiegel said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel phoned Trudeau last Tuesday, when they discussed the contents of a communiqué at next month's G20 summit in Hamburg.

The Minister replied that her understanding was "that this was an incorrect translation ..." "Let's be clear - the U.S.is bigger than one administration and we're going to be moving forward, as is the rest of the world, with the states, cities and businesses in the United States that are committed to serious climate action and committed to the Paris Agreement".

Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad wrote in emailed comments that "the characterization in this article is incorrect". These actions contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 13 (climate action), 7 (affordable and clean energy), in particular target 7.2 (By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix), and 11 (sustainable cities and communities), in particular target 11.6 (By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management).

Trump has said he would be open to renegotiating Paris, something most European G7 nations have already rejected.
