Trump attorney says president not under investigation

"Let me be clear - the president's not under investigation, as James Comey said in his testimony, that the president was not the target of investigation on three different occasions", Sekulow said.

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer who is part of a team hired by Trump to deal with allegations of collusion by his campaign with Moscow, appeared to contradict Trump's statement on Twitter on Friday that he was being investigated for firing his Federal Bureau of Investigation director last month.

In another sign of the gravity of the situation, Trump's legal team blitzed Sunday talk shows to contradict the President's tweet Friday where he said he is already under investigation.

Insiders are anxious about links between Jared Kushner's current lawyer, Jamie S. Gorelick, and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who is investigating alleged ties between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

"I do not appreciate you putting words in my mouth, when I've been crystal clear that the president is not and has not been under investigation", Sekulow shot back.

Trump's tweet was "in response" to a Washington Post story last Wednesday indicating that the special counsel's probe now included the president, Sekulow said in television interviews.

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump is beginning his day with a stream of tweets defending his record and lashing out at the investigation into Russian interference in the election. "That the president was not and is not a target of investigation", Sekulow answered.

Sekulow appeared on a series of Sunday morning news programs. Marco Rubio, (R- Fla.), who said he discussed the probe with Trump on Friday.

"I can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it", Sekulow said on CBS.

"He, from every pronouncement we have seen, feels very strongly that he did nothing wrong, and he wants people to say that, because he feels very strongly about it. I don't think it serves him well", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Trump supporter, on ABC's "This Week", adding that the President was right to be infuriated by "this whole Russian Federation baloney". "America is prepared to outstretch its hand and work with the people of Cuba, but we will not empower their oppressors", Rubio said in Miami. "It's that simple. The president is not under investigation".

That process still has a long way to run, said Sen.

Sekulow says that Trump hasn't been notified of any investigation.

"I'm not prepared to say that there's proof you could take to a jury, but I can say that there is enough that we ought to be investigating", says California's Rep. Adam Schiff.

Sekulow suggested that Trump had taken to Twitter because the president wanted to fight back against news organizations that Trump and his supporters have repeatedly accused of using leaks and anonymous sources to undermine the president.

Mr Sekulow sought to brush aside the president's words.

On Sunday, Trump again called the investigation a "witch hunt".
