Daniel Day-Lewis Officially Quits Acting

The movie has proved to be a big hit

The actor did not give a reason for his sudden retirement, and it's unclear if Day-Lewis will work in the entertainment industry in any capacity moving forward. The actor, who turned 60 in 2017, has announced he is retiring from acting. Famously, he will stay in character even when the cameras are no longer rolling.

Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Academy Award-winner for Best Actor, has retired.

Lewis' last film will be the upcoming Phantom Thread, in theaters december 25, which reunites him with his There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson. "He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years", the star's publicist, Leslee Dart, said in a statement to Variety. "As I feel I'm growing into a sense of that life, if I'm lucky, I begin to hear a voice". He learned to speak Czech for his role in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, confined himself to a wheelchair and demanded that the crew spoon-feed him meals during the entirety of filming My Left Foot, and insisted that everybody call him "Mr. President" on and off the set of Lincoln. After The Boxer in 1998, he literally vanished from the world's stage and became an apprentice shoemaker in Florence, Italy, returning five years later for Gangs of NY.

Day-Lewis, who is married to writer-director Rebecca Miller with three children, broke through with 1985's "My Beautiful Laundrette", by Stephen Frears.

His 46-year career has seen him bag three best actor Oscars, for playing wheelchair-bound Christy Brown in My Left Foot (1990), oil man Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood (2008) and for his portrayal of the former United States president in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (2013). Day-Lewis infamously walked out in the middle of a performance, and never returned to the stage again.
