United States congressional Democrats and Republicans condemned Beijing on Friday over the recent death of Liu Xiaobo, saying the demise of the imprisoned Nobel laureate highlighted the Chinese government's disregard for human rights.

World leaders hailed Chinese Nobel peace laureate Liu Xiaobo as a fearless fighter for human rights after his death on Thursday following a battle with cancer.

Mr Liu rose to prominence during the 1989 pro-democracy protests centred on Beijing's Tiananmen Square, and became one of hundreds of Chinese imprisoned for crimes linked to the demonstrations after they were crushed by the military.

Two pictures were positioned prominently in the hearing room — one of Liu and the other of an empty chair with his Nobel Peace Prize placed where he would have been sitting if he had been allowed to attend the 2010 ceremony.

The Chinese government is concerned that Liu will now become a greater symbol of the hope for democracy in China than he was during his life, according to The Times.

"I am deeply saddened to learn that fellow Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo has passed away while undergoing a lengthy prison sentence".

Geng said he had no information about Liu Xia, but added that the entry and exit of Chinese citizens would be handled in accordance with the law.

"Liu lived in an era when China witnessed the most rapid growth in recent history, but he attempted to confront Chinese mainstream society under Western support".

At that time, Liu had already had extensive experience of life behind bars. He suggested that the death of Liu removes another thorny issue for the Norwegian government, like whether he should have been invited to Norway at the risk of angering China once again.

According to the 61-year-old activist's supervising physicians in China, he could not be transferred overseas because "the situation was very risky, he might be in need of receiving surgery at any time", contradicting an opinion given by a foreign medical team who visited him last weekend.

U.S. Senator John McCain lauded Liu as "a champion for human rights" whose death was "an egregious violation of fundamental human rights".

The United States had called on China's government to let the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and democracy activist seek medical care at a location of his choosing.

"The reaction to his illness shows how much he was respected", said Cui Weiping, a former professor of literature in Beijing who knew Liu and now lives in Los Angeles.

Activist Hu Jia said authorities were pressuring Liu's family to quickly cremate his body.

In 1996, the authorities granted him permission to marry Liu Xia, an artist and poet, whilst still in jail.

A half dozen people receiving treatment or waiting on rows of metal chairs at the First Hospital of China Medical University said they had never heard of the man whose plight was making worldwide headlines.

China has rejected global criticism for not allowing Mr Liu, who had been serving an 11-year prison term for "subversion", to be treated overseas.

Worldwide human rights groups, Western governments and local activists had urged authorities to free Liu and grant his final wish to be treated overseas. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), spoke about Liu on the Senate floor on Wednesday, shortly before his death.

Liu Xiaobo was not the charter's main author - but of its roughly 300 signatories, he drew the heaviest punishment. In apparent protest of the award, a group of Chinese business and cultural leaders established an alternative to the Nobel, the Confucius Peace Prize, and later honoured such human rights renegades as Vladimir Putin, Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabe. "By granting him the Nobel Prize, the West has "kidnapped" Liu".

Liu had been a thorn in Beijing's side since 1989, when he helped negotiate a deal to allow protesters to leave Tiananmen Square before troops and tanks rolled in.

She has been held under house arrest without charge since 2010. "It's a persecution, it's a violation of human rights", she said. Link asked, a reference to Chinese President Xi Jinping. "The Solberg Government had a government declaration they took over with that claimed the government would hold the human rights banner high", Thorbjørn Færøvik, an author who's followed China closely for years, told newspaper Dagsavisen on Friday.
