Here's The Afghan Girls' Robotics Team Gleefully Showing Off Their US Visas

When Trump came to know about the case he intervened and decided to grant the visas to the girls

After much public outcry, the U.S. government has relented and given a team of Afghan girl robotic engineers the visas to enter a competition.

Twice rejected for US visas, an all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan arrived in Washington early Saturday after an extraordinary, last-minute intervention by President Donald Trump. Two previous attempts to secure visas, which involved traveling 500 miles to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, had failed.

State Department officials said that the Afghan girls' visas were granted through "parole", a process designed for applicants whose entry to the based on humanitarian or "public benefit" grounds.

Some might see things differently as a group of gifted people had to have the President of the United States intercede in the proceedings just to compete.

In the short time since their visa dilemma drew global attention, the girls' case has become a flashpoint in the debate about Trump's efforts to tighten entrance to the USA, including from many majority-Muslim countries.

HRW explained that, previously, the team would have been relegated to competing via Skype while their hardware made it into the United States.

"Seventeen years ago, this would not have been possible at all", Mohib said in an interview.

The girls from Herat, Afghanistan, ages 14 to 16, became a cause celebre this week when news spread that their visa applications, first submitted in May, had been rejected.

First Global president Joe Sestak - who had previously expressed his disappointment in the girls' visa denial - has commended the U.S. government for overturning the ban.

Over 160 countries will attend the global robotics challenge which will be held in Washington from July 16.

Mehraban says: "It's a happy moment for our team". "It's an important step for Afghan women". "We are going from a war-torn country and the objective is to show the capability of Afghan women". One team from each country is invited to participate, like an Olympics of high school robot builders.

It points to a Human Rights Watch report from July 7 that highlights the team's efforts to visit the USA and enter the competition.

"I truly believe our greatest power is the power to convene nations, to bring people together in the pursuit of a common goal and prove that our similarities greatly outweigh our differences", said First Global President Joe Sestak in a statement.

State Department officials do not comment on individual visa cases, but experts speculated that consular officers could have denied the visas out of concern that the girls could attempt to remain in the United States.
